AWCheney’s Forum On Immigration

Entering The Fray…With Trepidation

Although I have been commenting fairly regularly on certain blogs for several years now, it had never occurred to me to take on the arduous, and very public, task myself. I don’t look upon myself as a particularly gifted writer (far from it) and I am most certainly not what you might call computer literate. I am also not usually a very impulsive person, yet I very impulsively decided to take this on at the spur of the moment.

I’ve been rather closely following the illegal alien debate for a while now, having what you might call a passionate interest given that I am myself an immigrant (legal) and naturalized citizen. I’ve noticed that the debate has been rapidly descending into what amounts to verbal fisticuffs on the existing blogs, often creating a hostile environment for the relative opposing viewpoint. Although I personally am very supportive of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors’ efforts to address the issue of illegal aliens, as well the “Rule of Law” Resolution, I also recognize that there are other reasonable viewpoints out there quite worthy of consideration and I’d like to have the opportunity to “hear” and debate them without fear of personal attack against either me OR those on the other side of the issue. I’m quite certain that there are MANY others, on all sides of the subject, who feel exactly the same way. Besides, this is such a multi-faceted issue that there really is no way that anyone can say with any certainty that they have the ultimate solution to the entire problem…THAT is just not reasonable.

That said, I hope that this will indeed become a forum for discussion and debate where ALL can come together with mutual courtesy and respect regardless of their viewpoint on this highly charged issue. The rules are clearly stated to the right, as are the consequences for violating those rules. I recommend that all read them first before commenting so that there is no misunderstanding. I hope also to eventually have guest contributors on all sides of the issue and, perhaps, one or two of them will remain to contribute on a regular basis. For myself, I intend to try and reserve my opinion for the comments area and post information on the issue(s) for debate without editorial.

This is all still a work in progress and definitely a learning experience for me. I trust that, as I grow in this experience, we can all grow in our understanding of this issue of such great concern to so many in our country. I happen to be a great believer in brainstorming.

  3. Good luck! I just noticed your link on antibvbl. Since I can’t even keep up with one blog, I won’t be writing much, but will enjoy checking in from time to time to see what you’re talking about. I admire your spunk, and it’s great to learn new skills!!!

  4. Glad you could stop by, Firedancer. I imagine it will take awhile before I get enough visitors over here to get a debate going, but who knows…because I sure don’t!

  10. Great job, Anke. You have a very attractive blog and the rules seem clear and concise. I think you are going to be very busy.

  11. Way to go, AWC! I agree with our friend Dolph above. I think you will have your work cut out for you. Thanks for providing this forum. I look forward to seeing respectful debate.

I should’ve had you over for dinner the other night. We had Eggs Benedict. 😉

  12. Hey Dolph and Chris!…you found me!! I was hoping you two would. Welcome!

To respond to the “busy” observation Dolph…very astute. Just trying to get up some quality posts keeps me up all night and most of the day. My insomnia has turned into sleeplessness. I just hope it’s worth it. I was beginning to think that I’d never get comments on the issue threads.

And Chris, I was really hoping that you’d find my North American Union posts. I remembered how frustrated you were that there was so little mention of it soooo, consider them in your honor…AND YOU BETTER READ THEM! 😉

  14. AWC, I saw this listing recently in a publication and thought it would be useful to post when we start posting to your blog. It is about conflict resolution–

    • Make an honest self-assessment as to why the
    differences exist.
    • Clearly define the points of difference.
    • Clearly communicate your position and reasoning.
    • Provide unbiased data and facts to support your
    position.
    • Take the time to understand the importance of the
    issue.
    • Take the time to learn about the opposing
    position.
    • Build upon common needs and goals.
    • Focus on obtaining the most appropriate solution.
    • Confine discussions to the technical issues and
    avoid purely personal differences.
    • Seek to resolve issues in a timely manner, but don’t
avoid them in the hope they will go away.
    • Get opinions on the issue from uninvolved peers
    to gain additional perspective.

  15. Essentially, PW County Resident, that’s why I set down the rules right on the front page…so that people would think before they hit submit. I have no intention of directing debate, however, or defining it in narrow parameters…I want it to be free and open. But how I define free and open debate is that people can express their opinions without fear of being attacked for having them. That’s my bottom line.

I think what you have said above is going to make your blog a real success. You might end up like the marines, ‘a few good men.’ Some people don’t know how to argue ideas, it must always be about personality. It is interesting to see evolution of the local blogs, especially those dealing with the topic of immigration.

Let’s see if I can sum it up: bvbl allows attack but he censors opinions that doen’t agree with his…after a while. Eventually he bans people. Because of this, anti-bvbl springs to life. There is very little, if any censorship, people get attacked, but only one has been banned. AWCheney’s forum on Immigration is born. No attacks or vile language is allowed. I am under the impression nothing else will be discussed but immigration. Am I correct?

The personal attacks really do limit discussion on bvbl. I don’t feel they are as bad on anti but perhaps that is just difference in perspective. I hope that your blog prospers.

I am going to make a suggestion however. You have lived around here for a long time. I would like to see some of the Prince William history, at least during your residency in the county, somehow incorporated into the discussion. For example, why did Prince William become a bedroom community back in the 60’s? what were things like in the 50’s? Was it the growth in government that got the ball rolling (LBJ’s great society)? Events do not happen in isolation. Thanks for any consideration.

I’m going to be taking a break today from posting (a little under the weather) and stick to comments, but I hope to have one, or maybe two, new ones up some time tomorrow.

  26. Oh, you’re going to be fine here, AWC…but a good blog doesn’t come “just for the asking.” We must all help by doing our part.

The concept that a precious few, of widely different ideas on must issues, could get together and so quietly secret their intent and actions from hundreds of millions, many of who are political “enemies” just amazes me. We must work this hard to bring it above the horizon and into the open for discussion.

  28. Hi Medic…and welcome! Thanks for the good wishes. So far the discussions on the threads have been quite civil, and I can actually call them discussions. I’ve only had to issue one warning, and people are following the rules. Check out some of the posts while you’re here…you might find something to stir your interest.

  32. Hi Hello. I did a little research and figured out how to include the time with the date on all posts and comments so now you have a full date/time stamp on every submission on this blog.
